Odds & Ends

I've discovered it's a little daunting to get wedding planning done around Christmas - it's too much at once! While I'm excited about Christmas, I look forward to not being stressed about 2 big events.

I have made some progress, however. I picked up some pew bows to decorate the church (do not ask Annie or Matt about their take on this, trust me), a card holder, thank you notes, bridesmaid ribbon, flower girl dress patterns and flower girl basket fixin's. I'm trying to make stuff that I'm able to, partly to save money & partly b/c it's fun to be crafty. The flower girl baskets will be my first "wedding project." I have 2 wicker baskets that need spray-painted white. I also have silk stephanotis and mini red rose buds that I will somehow incorporate in the basket. :) I'll post pictures of the project when I start. I also made an important discovery - Hobby Lobby is the best place for all things wedding related. Michaels is ehhh, & JoAnn's is ok.

Matt is the best fiance *ever* because he's involved in the wedding planning. He's made several trips with me to the craft stores, helping pick out dress patterns & card boxes. He's a trooper. :) And I love him for it.

The dress has been altered & is ready to go. The big things I want to get started on soon are: catering, cakes, & flowers. We have some good leads on the catering & cakes - can anyone recommend a good florist?

Taking a Break

Matt & I decided to take a break from all things wedding planning during this Thanksgiving holiday, & it's been a nice reprieve. Most of the big stuff is taken care of anyway, so one weekend off isn't a big deal. My aunt & favorite cousin (also the maid of honor) were in town Thursday visiting other family, & stopped by with a present for Matt & me - our cake topper! I wish I had a picture to show, but it's in the "wedding room" at my parent's house. It's adorable, & will be a treasured keepsake! Matt has spiked hair on his figure - so cute! And I have sparkles in my dress. Thank you Aunt Marla!!

Meredith posted a couple pictures from last week's engagement picture session, & they look great!! There's one picture where Matt & I both cracking up, but neither of us can remember what was so funny. I cannot wait to see the rest of them!

Off to see "Australia"!

Get A Room!!

Friday night Teri and I headed over to a woman's house who had wedding decorations for sale on Craig's list. We scored 13 centerpieces for tables at the reception for $35. That includes the glass dishes to put candles in and the flowery froo-froo things that go around said candle dishes. I'm sure that Teri could describe them far better than I can, but I'll take a crack at it. I believe there is some ribbon on them as well...and greenery...and a place in the middle for candles, which I've already mentioned. They're table decorations.

We were supposed to meet with a cake woman Saturday afternoon, but she canceled on us at the last minute, so I decided to be productive anyway and went to get alterations done to my suit so it will fit properly for the fancy-schmancy dinner night on our honeymoon. I will be able to pick up the suit on December 5, which is also the same night Teri will be picking up her wedding dress, so that actually works out alright.

Also, if anyone knows a good cake person in the Columbus area, preferably one who is on the cheaper side of the scale, shoot me an e-mail so we can get the ball rolling on that. Oh yeah, we also still need to get catering figured out, so feel free to send suggestions for that too. The food is the last thing on our planning list that is better to be done sooner rather than later, so I'd really like to get it crossed off the list.

On Sunday afternoon, Meredith whisked us away to the magic that is Delaware, OH (where apparently nobody cleans up after their dog) for our engagement pictures. It was quite a bit of fun, and the weather was nicer yesterday than it's been in a while. She showed us a few of the pics on her camera after she took them, and they looked really good. I know that Teri and I are both looking forward to Meredith getting them posted online so we can view them in all their glory. We'll just have to try to be patient until then. In the meantime, you can stare at this blank rectangle and imagine how Teri and I looked getting our pictures taken.

By now you're probably wondering what the title of this post has to do with anything I've written about. When Teri and I were having a kissing picture taken under the marquee of a movie theater, some guy walking on the sidewalk toward us yelled "Get a room!" as a joke. Well played good sir.

Honey - mooooon!

Before I jump into today's blog, here's a little history for you on honeymoons that you may not have known.

"The first recorded appearance of the term honeymoon came in 1546 - but the ritual goes back much further. In earliest days, the man simply abducted the woman of his choice and took her into hiding. This lasted at least as long as it took for her angry relatives to stop searching for her. Normally, this was about one month, as marked by the phases of the moon. Thus the “moon” in honeymoon.

While in hiding, the couple would partake of mead - a wine made of water and old honey. According to Pliny the Elder, it consisted of “one part of old honey” and “three parts of water”. The mixture was then left in the sun for forty days, though, according to Pliny, some left it to ferment only nine days. Pliny went on to say, “with age it attains the flavor of wine”. As time passed, it was believed that, if the couple drank mead daily during the honeymoon, they would be assured of the birth of sons. One has to wonder how much mead Henry VIII would have drunk! Anyway, the mead provided the “honey” part of the honeymoon." Googobits.com

I'm glad both Matt's family & mine are supportive of our marriage, and that Matt doesn't have to abduct me! :)

Matt & I had the afternoon off work Friday for my birthday, and since we had free time during business hours, we figured it would be a good idea to stop by AAA to see about honeymoon options. I had been telling Matt about the wonderfulness that are cruises, and he seemed interested in the idea. We did some research earlier in the week, and found a cruise that would fit perfectly with our timeline and budget.

We had a great meeting with Bernie (who also booked my cruise with my cousin, Annie, last year), and she was able to help us set up a wonderful trip. We will be leaving from Miami with stops at CocoCay & Nassau (Bahamas) and Key West for a 5 day cruise. Our ship is called Majesty of the Seas, & looks to be a very nice ship. Click on the link to take a tour. :)

We still have to decide on our excursions, but there are a few involving pirates, so most likely we will do one of those. Hopefully Matt's ear is 100% by then as well, so snorkeling can be considered. Yay honeymoon!

A Productive Weekend

My parents were in town this past weekend to help get the rehersal dinner planned and to help out with wedding planning in general. The two finalists for the rehersal dinner heading into the weekend were The Spaghetti Warehouse and Schmidt's. And the winner is...Schmidt's!! The deciding factor was how their banquet room is set apart from the rest of the restaurant. If it's two things I like, it's privacy and spreading room. Schmidt's has both in spades!

On Saturday, Teri headed out with our moms for her appointment to get her wedding gown altered. Before that appointment, they went to DSW and Teri found her shoes for the wedding (and some comfy slippers). She also picked out the bridesmaid dress (you have to imagine that the pink sash is white and the rest of the dress is red). The ladies also found a pattern for the flower girl dresses, but the fabric store didn't have it in stock. It would be a bad idea to start making those dresses now anyway since the flower girls will only keep growing, so that's no big deal.

While Teri was up to that, I went to the tux store with our dads to get fitted for tuxes and set up the bridal party account (after the OSU game was finished). The vest/tie combo will be red (as shown in the link) for the groomsmen and ushers, black for our dads and white for me. Are you picking up on the red/black/white color theme for the wedding yet?

After all the shopping, we all rendezvoused at Donatos for pizza for dinner (which is when Mom thought it was necessary to call Melissa and give her the update on our schedule) and then headed back to Casa de Hudson for Cranium Wow and homemade apple crisp. Fun and delicous, respectively. If you haven't seen it yet, you truly are missing out on my mom's Tom Cruise impression. It's spot on.

On Sunday after church, we went to Macy's and my mom got the outfit she's going to wear to the wedding. I'd say we got a lot accomplished this weekend. Now if we could just have another weekend to recover from the weekend...

The Way I Heard It

So Teri has posted about her dress-buying excursion on Saturday, but there's some insider info that I heard that she apparently left out. All I know right now about Teri's dress is that it's white. Apparently at some point while Teri and her her mom were in the dress-selling establishment, her mom made the comment that she was probably the only girl in there who should be wearing a white dress. I would agree with that. After all, Teri isn't a ho like I'm sure most of the other girls were.

After lunch, Teri made a comment about maybe she shouldn't have eaten so much right before trying on dresses because she felt fat. I told her that she was most certainly not fat. Any guy reading this knows how much that was worth. However, when Teri was trying dresses on, she overheard some other girl whisper "she's so small" and another on a separate occasion say "she disappears when she turns sideways". I told you that you didn't look fat after lunch Teri.

Mostly I'm glad that Teri has found her dress already and that we can cross one major item off the list (in addition to the church and the photographer now). I know she'll look amazing in it too, though I won't get to know exactly what she'll look like until May 2.

I would say that everyone who gets to see Teri's dress or pictures of Teri in her dress is lucky, but I'm the one who gets to marry her, so there.

... all dressed in white

Today was a momumental day - today I bought my wedding dress:

Don't you love it?? Hehe, just kidding. I couldn't just go posting pictures of the real dress, or that would ruin it for Matt. :)

It was a pretty easy process. I had gone online this past week & chosen about 10 dresses I liked. I chose to get my dress at David's Bridal b/c they make it so easy. The other wedding dress boutiques in town just have too many steps involved.

I learned an important lesson today & want to pass it on to future brides - do not take your whole wedding party, family, extended family, future in-laws & your favorite baby-sitter to the dress appointment. Having my mom as my only other opinion was a fantastic idea, & there's no one else I'd rather pick out my wedding dress with than her.

I narrowed it down to 2 dresses, & after "marinating" in both, finally made my decision. The dress is bought, & hanging in my old bedroom. It needs hemmed before the big day, but the major decision has been made. We are good to go!
He Said / She Said

Matt's Take on the Engagement Story:
Yeah, I've been engaged for 10 days and probably should have already written this, but I've been busy, so I'm just now getting to it. Here's the long-winded version (you've been warned) of how I proposed to Teri.

On Saturday, October 18th Teri and I were meeting our Bible study group at the church to head out for Circle S Farm. I showed up around 9:20 that morning because I knew we'd have some phone calls to make before heading out. I put the ring (in the box) and my camera in my jacket pocket to camouflage the fact that the ring was there. When I got to Teri's she was predictably not ready yet. I knew that would be the case, as I was getting there early. She headed into her bathroom to finish curling her hair, and I set about clipping my fingernails.

I then put Sparky in his cage so he wouldn't be jumping all over me and I got the ring out of my jacket pocket. As I walked over to the bathroom where Teri was, I said "I have a question". It was at this point that I, for whatever reason, assumed that she'd pause with what she was doing and stick her head out of the bathroom inquisitively. Of course, that's not how it worked, and Teri kept curling away. At that point I said "Maybe you should turn around". She did.

When she turned around, I was on my knee with the ring out and I asked her if she would marry me. She was very happy and said "yes", which was followed up shortly by her asking if it all was real. I assured her it was. After she quickly wrapped up getting her hair ready, we called her parents to let them know that we were engaged. Then we called my parents, who were out of town riding horses. I left a voicemail message, and my parents didn't actually find out that we were engaged for a little over 24 hours. Oh well, I did what I could. I then called my siblings to let them know, and we headed off to the church to meet everyone.

I'm glad that I proposed when I did because Teri got to show off the ring to a bunch of people right away, she wasn't going to sleep well that night with running her first marathon the next day anyway and it gave her something to think about during the marathon to distract her from the task at hand.

We've already started some of the wedding planning, and if you check out the links on the right side of my blog, you'll see the link for our wedding blog that will have updates and whatnot on it.

I love you Teri.

Teri's Take on the Engagement Story:
I thought the weekend of October 17 would be memorable due to the fact I would be running my first marathon. But, as it turns out, that is only 1 reason it was memorable.

To distract myself Saturday from stressing out about the race, we had planned to go to Circle S Farms with our young adult group. I was almost ready when I heard Matt's familiar knock on the door, & let him in as usual. We only had about 25 minutes before we were meeting others, so I went back to finish getting ready. Matt lollygagged in the other room, & he meandered back to see how much longer I was going to be. I let him know I was almost ready, but not quite. He said that maybe I should turn around because he had a question. At that moment, I knew what he was up to. :)

When I turned around, he had gotten down on one knee & had the ring out. He asked me to marry him, & I said YES! Mr. Matt is quite sneaky ... I figured he would propose Oct/Nov, but I had no clue it would be Saturday. He had the talk with my dad on Friday, & my dad gave his blessing. My dad prayed with Matt too (melting!). Matt had planned to propose Nov 1, but the ring was ready early, and he is kinda impatient. ;-) We immediately began making the calls to let everyone know.

We went to my parents later that day to watch the game, & my mom had hung balloons & posters congratulating us. My grandparents (coming to visit for the marathon) were in the driveway at the same time we arrived, so they got to hear the news firsthand too.

All I can say about the weekend is wow. I am so blessed to have Matt in my life, and cannot wait to spend the rest of our lives together. God's timing and plan are perfect.

Your Place For All The Updates

Teri and I have set this blog up as a way to keep people updated on the wedding and wedding planning process. Check back for more updates in the future. Thanks.
